Replacing an Old Radiator

Radiators can be replaced for a number of reasons.

The existing radiator may be leaking, corroded, damaged or simply no longer providing enough heat for the room. In other cases, homeowners want to update the appearance of the room or make better use of the available wall space.

A straightforward replacement may be possible where the existing pipework and radiator size are suitable.

If the new radiator is a different size or style, some alteration to the pipework may be required.

What Size Radiator Do I Need?

Radiator size should not be chosen on appearance alone.

The amount of heat a room needs depends on factors such as:

  • Room size
  • External walls
  • Window size and glazing
  • Insulation
  • Desired room temperature
  • The temperature at which the heating system operates

A radiator that is too small may struggle to heat the room properly, while an unnecessarily large radiator may take up more wall space than required.

Manufacturers such as Stelrad use room dimensions, glazing and insulation as part of radiator heat-loss calculations.

Can You Move a Radiator?

Yes, in many properties a radiator can be moved to a different wall.

This can be useful during renovations, kitchen changes, extensions or when furniture makes the existing location inconvenient.

Moving a radiator normally involves altering the heating pipework, so the proposed position needs to be checked before work begins.

We will also consider whether the new position allows the radiator to heat the room effectively.

Adding an Extra Radiator

An additional radiator may be appropriate if you are creating a new room, converting part of the property or finding that an existing space does not have enough heat.

Before adding another radiator, the existing heating system and pipework should be considered.

The aim is to make sure the new radiator suits the room and works properly with the rest of the system rather than simply adding the largest radiator that will fit.

Standard, Vertical and Designer Radiators

There is a wide choice of radiator styles available.

Standard Panel Radiators

Panel radiators are commonly used throughout UK homes and are available in a wide range of sizes and outputs.

They are often a practical choice where reliable heat output and straightforward installation are the main priorities.

Vertical Radiators

Vertical radiators can work well where horizontal wall space is limited, for example in kitchens, hallways or renovated rooms.

The heat output still needs to be suitable for the space, regardless of the radiator shape.

Designer and Cast Iron Radiators

For period properties or rooms where appearance is particularly important, designer or cast iron radiators may be considered.

These can vary significantly in weight, dimensions and heat output, so the wall, floor, pipework and heating requirements need to be assessed before installation.

Can New Radiators Work With My Existing Boiler?

Usually, yes.

New radiators can normally be incorporated into an existing wet central heating system, provided they are correctly sized and the system is in suitable condition.

If several radiators are being replaced or the heating system is being altered substantially, it may also be sensible to check circulation, system water quality and controls.

If your radiators are cold or heating unevenly rather than simply needing replacement, the problem may be caused by something else. Our boiler repairs and heating fault service can help identify the cause.

What If There Is Sludge in the Heating System?

Dark heating water, cold areas on radiators and poor circulation can sometimes indicate contamination inside the system.

Replacing a radiator does not automatically solve a system-wide sludge problem.

If we find signs of contamination, we can advise whether system cleaning or a powerflush should be considered before or alongside the radiator work.

Radiators and Heat Pumps

Radiator sizing becomes particularly important when radiators are used with a heat pump.

Heat pumps generally operate at lower water temperatures than traditional boiler systems. That can mean existing radiators need to be larger, or additional radiators may be required, to provide the same amount of heat.

Energy Saving Trust guidance specifically recommends considering existing radiator type, size and available space when designing a lower-temperature heating system.

If you are considering an air source heat pump, we can assess the radiators as part of the heating-system design.

What Does Radiator Installation Cost?

There is no single price that applies to every radiator installation.

The cost can depend on:

  • The radiator type and size
  • Whether the existing radiator is being replaced
  • Whether pipework needs to be altered
  • The proposed radiator position
  • Accessibility
  • Whether several radiators are being changed at the same time
  • Any additional heating-system work required

Once we know what you want to change, we can provide a quotation based on the work involved.
