Signs You May Need a New Boiler

A boiler problem doesn’t automatically mean you need a replacement. Many faults can be repaired, particularly when the boiler is otherwise in good condition and replacement parts are readily available.

However, there comes a point where repeated repairs, unreliable heating or an ageing appliance make replacement worth considering.

Here are some of the signs we would look at before discussing the options with you.

Your Boiler Keeps Breaking Down

A boiler repair does not mean a boiler needs replacing.

But if you are calling an engineer several times a year for different faults, it is worth looking at the bigger picture.

Repeated breakdowns can become inconvenient and expensive, particularly if several components are beginning to show signs of wear.

Repair Costs Are Starting to Add Up

Sometimes repairing a boiler is clearly the sensible option.

Other times, the cost of a major repair on an older appliance can be difficult to justify, particularly when there is no guarantee another component will not fail later.

Before deciding, consider:

  • The cost of the proposed repair
  • The age and general condition of the boiler
  • Whether other faults have occurred recently
  • Availability of replacement parts
  • How well the boiler currently meets your heating needs

Your Boiler Is Getting Older

Age alone is not a reason to throw away a working boiler.

A regularly maintained older boiler may continue to operate reliably for years.

However, older boilers can be less efficient than modern condensing models, and parts may become harder to obtain as manufacturers stop supporting particular ranges.

Energy Saving Trust notes that modern condensing boilers are more efficient than older models because they recover more heat that would otherwise escape through the flue.

Your Heating or Hot Water Is Becoming Unreliable

A home taking longer to warm up does not necessarily mean the boiler is failing.

Cold radiators can also be caused by trapped air, sludge, circulation problems or heating controls.

But if the boiler regularly loses heating or hot water, shuts itself down or displays recurring fault codes, it should be investigated.

An engineer can then establish whether the problem is repairable or whether replacement makes more sense.

Your Energy Use Has Increased

A higher energy bill on its own is not proof that your boiler needs replacing.

Prices, weather, thermostat settings and the amount of heating you use can all affect bills.

However, if an older boiler is working harder than it used to and its performance has noticeably deteriorated, efficiency can form part of the repair-versus-replace decision.

Replacement Parts Are Becoming Difficult to Find

As boilers get older, certain components may become obsolete or increasingly expensive to source.

If an engineer can no longer obtain an appropriate part, replacement may eventually become unavoidable.

Even where parts remain available, it may be worth comparing the cost of a significant repair against the cost and benefits of replacing the appliance.

Repair or Replace: How Do You Decide?

There is no single rule that applies to every boiler.

A repair may make sense when the fault is straightforward, the boiler is otherwise reliable and suitable parts remain available.

A boiler Replacement may be worth discussing when:

  • Breakdowns are becoming frequent
  • Major repairs are becoming expensive
  • Parts are becoming difficult to obtain
  • Heating or hot water is unreliable
  • The boiler no longer suits the property
  • Several components are showing signs of wear

ReliaHeat can inspect your existing boiler and explain the available options before you decide.
